Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use Shamu?

The Shamu research cluster is available at no charge to all University of Texas at San Antonio students, faculty and staff. Shamu users may also request access for collaborators affiliated and unaffiliated with UTSA. This request must be made by the owner (not the external collaborator).

What do I need to know to use the cluster?

Users primarily interact with the cluster via the command line. Some knowledge of the Linux command line is essential. The RCSG offers workshops throughout the calendar year on how to use the cluster, parallel programming, CUDA programming, etc... Check the UTSA Training site for upcoming classes.

Why can't I login?

  1. Perhaps your password was entered incorrectly. All Shamu logins are tied to your My UTSA ID and passwords are your campus passphrase.
  2. If you tried to login more than 3 times without success, the system temporarily bans your account from logging in for 15 minutes. What a while and try again.
  3. You don't have an account on Shamu.
  4. There could be a problem with the login nodes. The RCSG Staff will be working on the issue until resolved. Always check the RCSG mailing list. We announce any scheduled and non-scheduled down times to the mailing list.
  5. Your account on Shamu has expired. Students by default are granted one (1) year access to Shamu. Students will need to have their sponsor or PI notify the RCSG to have their account extended. Faculty and staff accounts do not expire.
If you need to change your passphrase, please contact the UTS Tech Cafe or go to the UTSA Passphrase Portal to reset your passphrase.
